We will never help you do that. This is a big SEO mistake and under no circumstances sh404SEF can do that. There are many ways to redirect some 404s to specific existing pages including the home page but never all 404 to the home page. Just do not do that. 404s are good and that's what you need to have if you remove a page. If you move a page, then you should redirect to the new page.

Okay, I'm ready to download but there's a warning saying it will change URLs.

It will change URLs compared to Joomla URLs. If you already have sh404SEF, URLs won't change - despite your version being so old (more than 3 years is like forever in CMS land).

I'm also clueless how to upload and install.

sh404SEF is installed like any Joomla extension, using the standard Joomla installer. I would encourage you to follow the installation procedure described in the documentation.

As your site is totally outdated, I would very strongly suggest that you make a backup of your site beforehand (and be able to restore if anything wrong happens). Is your Joomla also outdated?

On point number 2, we have lots of crawler errors and we think redirecting the 404s may help fix the crawler errors

You mean Google Bot? or which crawlers? If those 404s are on your site - ie bad links, what you ought to do is simply fix or remove the links. If youy talk about Google Bot, they will remove 404s from their index and come back on a regular basis to be sure those are really 404s. Again, there is nothing bad in that and having 404s is fine, including 404s in Google Search console reports.

What's not normal is if those links are on your site and they have a mistake or are just wrong. That you need to fix. Not by redirecting, but simply by fixing the links.

Yes, that sounds safer. Be sure to keep both Joomla and sh404SEF (and all your extensions) updated at all times, both for security and continued operation though.
