Hi,
You will get 404s on your site everyday, even if you have very little traffic, because there are hundreds of bots, some legit and some attackers or spammers that will create 404s on your site (you will find requests for Wordpress or Drupal plugins or Joomla extensions that are not installed on your site for instance).
I would suggest you use sh404SEF on a regular basis, for instance once a week (depending on your site traffic and new content addition), and check the 404s that happened. There are filters to display 404s for the last hour, days, week, etc
Then review the 404s, and either delete them or fix the problem if they come from your own site.
