I installed the plugin sh404SEF on the Joomla website https://braininjurycenter.net to fix the duplicate page contents. I cannot make it work because I am on a shared server (Apache) with HostGator.

Here's what a representative of HostGator told me after we agreed that mod_rewrite is not enabled on the Apache shared server.

"This cannot be enabled on a Shared server. You client may need to upgrade to a VPS/Dedicated server"

The server allow .htaccess override though. Here's what I've done to test it:

I deleted everything from the .htaccess file and write a simple command here, for example:
Code: “Redirect /google.html http://www.google.com”
After I pointed my browser to http://www.braininjurycenter.net/google.htm
And it redirects me to Google.com then htaccess override is OK.

I spent few hours to make sh404SEF works in vain, I would greatly like to have some help.

Thank you for your time.
Please let me know if you need more info or credentials.

Hî,

I find it unlikely that mod_rewrite cannot be enabled at host gator on shared servers, they wouldn't have much customers.

Actually, I checked your site and right now, URL rewriting is enabled and working. If not, you would get a server 404, or joomla wouldn't even be displayed.

This is a pre-sale forum, support is provided through our helpdesk (see menu, Get support). Please open a ticket there with connection details.

Hi Weeblr,

Thank you and sorry to have post my question on the wrong forum, I have posted again my message on the correct sh404SEF technical support forum.

May I ask you how did you proceed to check if URL rewriting is enabled I mean from the server side not from Joomla backend?

Thank you,

Hi

I just clicked on a link on your site. As stated above:
If not, you would get a server 404, or joomla wouldn't even be displayed.
The 404 you get (you got, this seems to be fixed now), is a Joomla one, with your site displaying normally, and telling you that the page requested is not found.
A server 404, when the server doesn't have mod_rewrite or similar, is simply a blank page with a blunt message, something like this: http://www.elated.com/res/Image/articles/management/apache/making-a-custom-error-page/apache_404_default.gif
