Hi there

I have just bought and installed the SEO component, and I had two questions: So this is not a pre sales question

1. I had previously inserted a few meta descriptions and meta keywords into several separate article page of my site before installing the component. Now, having installed it, the pages for which I hadn't previously manually entered any meta descriptions and keywords now all seem to have the exact same description as the homepage, not ones that have been generated based on the page content which is what I thought the extension would do. Have I done something wrong in the settings, as surely these need to reflect the content of the page?

2. In the section about duplicate urls, am I supposed to do anything for this as it has already selected the preffered url for each set of duplicates? Do I just leave it to do its thing?

Thanks

Hi

1 - sh404SEF only overrides Joomla title and description with those you manually enter in the "Title and meta manager". If you don't, then it lets the Joomla provided title and description in the page untouched.
What you see happening here is the usual Joomla behavior: as no description was provided by you on the article page, Joomla uses the global description one. As you haven't set any description override with sh404SEF, then the Joomla one is used.
The fix is simply to not enter any global description in Joomla conifguration. It serves no purpose and has this negative side effect. You can setup a custom title and description for the home page using the "Home page meta" button available on most pages of sh404SEF toolbar.

2 - You should leave things as they are. sh404SEF is protecting you against those duplicates created by Joomla, by not showing them to the outside world. You only have to deal with them if the preferred URL is not the correct one (ie, you must select another Itemid for instance).

Thank you for your response, that is really helpful

IT has done something weird to my site though, now when I click on some images that I had previously linked to certain pages, it gives a 404 error. i am happy to share with you the page, as I don't know what else to do other than uninstall the SEO component!

Please can you come back to me urgently

THank you

Hi

You want to check the links in the images; They might be relative, or instead hard coded to the wrong targets; if the URLs have changed, then the link may need to be updated.
If you can't manage, please post a ticket at our helpdesk, which is how support is provided.

Thank you for all your help it has been really useful. I just have one more question, based on your first response above. What should I do to get the best SEO results per page? Should I manually enter, in the sh404sef component, the page title and description tag that I would like to see, or is there a way that I can set it to automatically generate something specific for each page?

Thanks
