when I enable sh404sef - System plugin the front end of the site www.xxxx.com goes down. I have it disabled now. I have the latest version. Any ideas?

A white page (I assume you mean you have a totally white page?) means that a PHP error is happening. The error is hidden by Joomla default settings, so you should:
- go to Joomla global configuration
- set "Gzip" to No
- set "Error reporting" to maximum
- enable the system plugin and tell us what the actual error message is.
Please also state you exact and full Joomla and sh404SEF versions.

This would indicate maybe that some part of sh404SEF are missing, a failure during upload and installation.
I would suggest you uninstall, then download a new copy, then install that new copy.
