Hi Yannick,

I just purchased this extension last night, mainly to get rid of the ID #'s in URL's. So far, I'm just getting to know sh404SEF and very pleased!

I have one area that is causing frustration and I can't seem to figure it out. In order to display my 'products' (panorama prints that I'm setting up to sell via J2store) I'm using the tag component in my main menu. Each individual product is essentially an article. Those articles however, are not linked directly to any menu items. This took some creative formatting and organization but so far it's achieving what I want and gives me the easiest method for adding new products as time goes on. The problem is in the breadcrumbs section when the individual articles are displayed. Each level 'up' keeps getting a strange '/table' in the URL which leads to an incorrect link.

Here is where breadcrumbs are correct:
From [xxxx] hover 'Print Shop' > 'Panoramas' > Select 'Autumn Scenes'. (clicking any level of breadcrumbs from there leads to correct URL's)

Here is where breadcrumbs are incorrect:
From [xxxx] any of the breadcrumb levels except 'Home' has the '/table' in the URL and leads to strange places.

I thought I could fix this by choosing the correct 'duplicate' URL's from sh404SEF but that hasn't worked.

I would be most grateful if you could assist. Please advise if you would like SuperUser to troubleshoot.

Thank you,

John B.

Hi

The "/table" thing is not strange at all. Joomla has 2 types of category links: the default is a list view, and then you can add "..&layout=blog..." in the non-sef URL to get a blog view.

With default settings, assuming we talk about a "Panoramas" category, sh404SEF attach the /panoramas URL to the blog view (because it's by far the most commonly used).
Then of course we need another URL to link to the list view of the category, so by default that would be /table/panoramas, as many times "table" represents well the list display.

You can change all this behavior under the "Extensions > Joomla" section of sh404SEF configuration. remember to purge URLs between changes to settings that modify the way URLs are built, so that new ones are created.

Also, a good question to ask is whether that list view is the correct one to display if a user clicks on that "Panoramas" link in your breadcrumb. Do you want them to see the list view or the blog view?

If the blog view, then this is not an sh404SEF issue any more, but instead about the extension/template used to display the breadcrumb.

Thank you! I understand now regarding the '/table' and I was able to remove it from the URL's.

I also purged and new URL's seem to be OK.

I'm still a bit confused however about how my breadcrumbs are working:

If the main menu is followed: Print Shop>Panoramas>Autumn Scenes, from there you can go back 'up' from the bread crumbs and it's correct (the way I want it).

If you go all the way to a 'product' (article) however, Print Shop>Panoramas>Autumn Scenes>select first product (autumn-at-skaha-9364-1236) the breadcrumbs 'change'(?), and following it back up leads to these strange lists (you'll see the double thumbnails in the list of products one thumb from article content, one thumb from article 'Intro Image').

...What I want is for the breadcrumb trail from the article to be the same as the breadcrumb trail from 'Autumn Scenes' as above.

It might take me a day or two to figure this out by adjusting settings/purging in sh404 but perhaps you could point me to a shorter route to get there?

Many thanks!

John :)

Hi

sh404SEF doesn't manage the breadcrumb of course, but when Joomla does it, it uses the Itemid (the menu identifier) of an item to decide on the breadcrumbs bit. It's a bit complex to be honest.
What you want to check is, for a faulty URLs, if there are "Duplicates" listed in the URL manager for that SEF URL. Those are multiple non-sef URL that Joomla or extensions may have created, but that sh404SEF grouped under one single SEF, to avoid multiple URLs for same content, which is detrimental to your SEO.

Now the non-sef selected may not always be the right one, and you may have to select another one using the "Duplicate" URLs window. I'd suggest reading this page of documentation to learn more about it.

Yikes! It seems the more I adjusted to make the breadcrumbs work, the more I ran into problems. I have decided just to not use breadcrumbs for those individual 'product' pages. You can get to those products several ways through the site, so depending how you get there, the breadcrumbs aren't necessarily a 'true' trail anyway. Know what I mean?

For the product pages, I'm going to try to use a side menu to display just the 'shop' portion of the main menu and at least give users a means of navigating from there :)

As I mentioned earlier, the breadcrumbs/URL's are OK in all of the other navigation so I think I'm good to go here now, Yannick ...you may close this ticket.

Thanks very much for all your assistance!

Hi

Well the breadcrumb construction is pretty tricky when based on Joomla menu structure. If some things are accessible from multiple places, it makes things even harder.
Indeed with a submenu, it should be easier to get Itemid under control.

CLosing the ticket, now, good luck for the rest of the project.
