Hello Yannick

Thank you for resolving that issue with the screen size view for 4SEO. It is working fine now. I normally work on a bigger desktop, but it has just been too cold to go into my office recently. But I will work on the desktop in future.

Just one other quick question. I had SH404SEF, then I moved to Joomla 4, installed 4SEO and disabled SH404SEF. The Joomla SEF URL's are OK for me, but I use a component called JomHoliday and I have noticed that some of the URL's are a bit untidy and as usual for Joomla, it is creating multiple urls for the same page (because it can be accessed via different routes).

My question is whether I should install 4SEF? It will be straight onto a J4 installation, but I do still have all the SH404SEF db tables in the database. I would quite like to have the control back over the url's so I can re-write them - but also I don't have a lot of time at the moment to be playing with the configurations, having websites fall over, etc. I know that it is just out of development, but should 4SEF work straight out of the box?

Hi

My question is whether I should install 4SEF?

I would say you should have transitioned from sh404SEF to 4SEF first. Unless you don't care about the site SEO, changing URLs is a no-go, you lose all your SEO signals when you change URLs.

but also I don't have a lot of time at the moment to be playing with the configurations, having websites fall over, etc. I know that it is just out of development, but should 4SEF work straight out of the box?

Yes, it should work pretty well but:

- it's never guaranteed, because it will work well, but the extensions you are using may not. It's never only about sh404SEF or 4SEF "working", all things have to work together

- as you're on Joomla 4 already, 4SEF will import SEF URLS from your sh404SEF tables indeed, but likely not sh404SEF configuration (because sh404SEF is not installed anymore). 4SEF configuration is very similar to sh404SEF, and of course much simpler as it only deals with URLs, but you'll have to review 4SEF configuration to match that of sh404SEF.

Thanks Yannick

OK, I think that I will install 4SEF on one of my sites. To be honest, that site has been declining for about 3-4 years and I plan to do a lot of work on it in 2023 to create new content, update old articles which don't get anywhere near the Top 20, etc. There is only a handful of URLs which get good click-throughs from Google, so I can preserve the url structure for these pages. I will check out the 4SEF configuration before I install. SH404SEF worked ok with JomHoliday, so hopefully it will be the same with 4SEF.

Hi

here is only a handful of URLs which get good click-throughs from Google, so I can preserve the url structure for these pages.

To conserve signals (and therefore rankings) URLs need not to change, as simple as that. Change one character in a URL (add or remove a trailing slash for instance), and it's a different page altogether: all ranking signals assigned to the old page won't apply to the new one, which is therefore an entirely "new" page, with no backlinks, no authority, etc

SH404SEF worked ok with JomHoliday, so hopefully it will be the same with 4SEF.

I don't know about JomHolidy and sh404SEF did not have any support for it, so basically it was using Joomla SEF URLs.

The only reason JomHoliday could give you trouble is if it came with an sh404SEF plugin to build URLs. 4SEF won't use that sh404SEF plugin and so if it was the case, URLs will revert to whatever Joomla was using. If so, you'll need to havge that JomHoliday plugin updated to use the 4SEF plugin format (documented here).

Hello Yannick

Just to give you an update. I installed 4SEF on my J4 site www.longtermrentalsinfrance.com. It actually installed fairly easily and I was getting on great with it, doing a lot of work rewriting some of the Joomla SEF urls. But then I hit a problem. The component I use (JomHoliday) is a property booking software. So clients can send us messages to reserve. Contained in the message is a link to the house/apartment they are interested in. It is obviously using the Joomla SEF url (so this is not being pulled from the JomHoliday component or from the database)

With 4SEF turned on, we are not receiving a link to the particular house they are enquiring about (it should be in the reference field. So we have no idea which property the enquiry is about (https://prnt.sc/jHZmXGbWIvg0)

This is another enquiry with 4SEF turned off. The url of the property page is shown in the reference field (https://prnt.sc/HjXFghSS6431)

I assume that it will be more of an issue for the JomHoliday developers, but is there anyway of getting this booking form to work by pulling the URL from the 4SEF database rather than relying on the standard Joomla URL?

This is not urgent. Enjoy your New year!

Hi Iain,

As you're in the pre-sales forum, which tickets are public, I'd suggest creating a new ticket in the 4SEF dedicated category.

It is obviously using the Joomla SEF url (so this is not being pulled from the JomHoliday component or from the database)

That should not matter in any way. Links are not (should not) be taken from any database, JomHoliday or 4SEF. In Joomla, links are created in a very specific way, by calling a dedicated Joomla function. That's how all links are created and I'm sure the JomHoliday dev is 100% familiar with that.

When using that standard Joomla method to created links, Joomla either directly creates the link, or it passes down the requests to any SEF extension installed on the site. This is what allows SEF extensions to operate on all sites transparently.

So there's no reason that link is not there really. Especially in that case, it's not that the link is wrong, but it's actually entirely missing.

I'd be curious to hear what the JomHoliday dev says.

Again, I'm going to close this ticket, please be kind to open a new one in the 4SEF section, mentioning this ticket #9342.

Best regards
