Hi,
I understand that 4SEF hasn't yet been released so I'd like to get a sense of what to consider with respect to developing new sites. Does it make sense, at this point, to start building in Joomla 4 with the hope that 4SEF will be released within the next couple of months or is it safer to continue building sites in Joomla 3? With the exception of 1 extension all the extensions I intend to use going forward work in Joomla 4.

If I decide to develop a site in Joomla 4 and 4SEF has not been released by the time the new website is ready to launch what approach should be considered?

How are other Joomla 4 sites managing their URL issues at this point?

Thank you,
Les

Hi Les,

I guess it depends on why you want to use 4SEF. The main difference between 4SEF and sh404SEF is that 4SEF is only doing URLs creation and management. It has strictly no other feature, for instance meta data management, redirects, adding canonicals, etc are not there at all.

All SEO-related features in sh404SEF and many more, such as sitemaps, structured data, content replacer and then redirects, canonical, or opengraph are in 4SEO.

It was designed that way so that you can use all SEO features without being forced to change your URLs. 4SEO works the same with sh404SEF (on Joomla 3), 4SEF, or just Joomla SEF or any SEF extension you may have. It does not know and does not care how URLs are created.

For an existing site moving from Joomla 3 to Joomla 4, you need 4SEF because you want to keep your URLs.

For new sites, again, it all depends on how you where using sh404SEF, whether you want URLs to be independent of menu items and such.

If not, go for 4SEO, it's the all-in-one extension for the now and the future.

If yes, well, 4SEF should be released as public beta in the coming days for all sh404SEF subscribers, so you can give it a try soon.

Hi Yannick,
I'm interested in using 4SEF for the same reason that I used sh404SEF, which is to generate search engine friendly URLs. Occasionally I've been asked by clients to generate a different URL for a given page which was also where sh404SEF played a role. SEO hasn't been as high a consideration.

I'm not migrating sites from Joomla 3 to Joomla 4 but instead redeveloping Joomla 3  but in Joomla 4. I haven't looked into 4SEO enough to know if I'll need it.

For Joomla 3 sites the URLs have been set up to depend on menu items. If that continues in Joomla 4 will I manage all right with 4SEF without installing 4SEO?

Thanks,
Les

Hi

I'm interested in using 4SEF for the same reason that I used sh404SEF, which is to generate search engine friendly URLs.

Joomla also generates SEF URLs by itself, so you don't need sh404SEF for that. However, with Joomla, you'll need to create menu items to articles, or categories or both to have "proper" URLs. Is this what you are referring to?

Occasionally I've been asked by clients to generate a different URL for a given page which was also where sh404SEF played a role.

Yes, that is way easier with sh404SEFR/4SEF, and sometimes cannot be done with Joomla at all.

For Joomla 3 sites the URLs have been set up to depend on menu items.

That's a bit confusing, to be honest. Aside from being able to create "custom" URLs, you basically only need Joomla if you go with menu item-based URLs.

If that continues in Joomla 4 will I manage all right with 4SEF without installing 4SEO?

4SEF and 4SEO are unrelated. One does not need the other in any way. In terms of SEF URLs creation, 4SEF will work in the same way as sh404SEF. If you never do anything about meta data, redirects, structured data, sitemaps, content replacement, then you're good.

If you ever used JSitemap Pro, OSMap, Tassos' Google Structured Data, Regular Labs' ReReplacer or any other SEO-related extension, you can replace all of them with 4SEO.

Yannick,
Based on where things are with respect to 4SEF it looks like I should be fine once I'm ready to launch a Joomla 4 site in 4 to 6 weeks. I'm also likely to get 4SEO for its general utility at some point.

Thanks,
Les
