Hi

i wanted to ask if sh404sef would be compatible with Joomla 4 or if it will become?

If it would get compatible when could be the approximate time for that because i would like to upgrade to J4?

Another question. In the Joomla Magazine i have read that there will come a new extension 4SEF. Would this replace sh404sef or will this be a new better extension for SEF from weeblr and if so what would be possible (to switch from sh404sef to 4SEF or is there any other plan how to migrate to that?)

It would be very nice to get more plans from weeblr for J4 which is now stable released.

Thank you for your info.

Kind regards

Hi there,

i wanted to ask if sh404sef would be compatible with Joomla 4 or if it will become?

It isn't and won't be made compatible, that would required a full rewrite which did not make any sense. Instead, we have created 4SEO which is focused on SEO-only and as such is much more advanced than sh404SEF in that field: it's all the SEO of sh404SEF plus structured data, sitemaps generation, broken links detection, full content replacer and many more smaller things.

As you read, the SEF URLs features of sh404SEF will be made into 4SEF. 4SEF will only do SEF URLs, ie creating them automatically and allow customization. It will be a replacement for sh404SEF both on Joomla 3 and 4, but without any other type of SEO features such as canonical or redirects (which are in 4SEO).

Moving from sh404SEF to 4SEF will be transparent: install 4SEF and disable sh404SEF, that's all. This should be done in Joomla 3, before you upgrade to Joomla 4 but can also be done directly in Joomla 4, provided that the database tables and configuration files are left in place after the migration to Joomla 4.

Note that any redirection or custom meta data can only be transferred to 4SEO as 4SEF will only take care of SEF URLs. This also will be transparent (ie, 4SEO will detect and use sh404SEF custom data found, if any).

As for a deadline, development of 4SEF is just starting and I plan on releasing it as stable during the last quarter of 2021, with beta testing during a month or 6 weeks before stable release, as we did for 4SEO (although 4SEo was larger and more complex).

Hope this covers it all, thanks for your continued use of sh404SEF!

Best regards

Thank you for your answer.

This clears a lot and i have to wait for the new extension till i can upgrade.

One last question. Which extension (4SEF or 4SEO) will handle the duplicate pages?

Kind regards

Hi

If you run 4SEF then basically you do not have duplicates any more because 4SEF/sh404SEF creates the same SEF for all possible non-sef for the same content (at least with Joomla content, we may not be able to achieve that with all 3rd-party extensions).

4SEO does not create URLs so instead it detects which URLs are for the same content and places canonical links on the duplicates, pointing at the "main" URL. That's less "safe" in terms of duplicates management than just not having duplicates at all - but it allows working with existing sites without modifying their URLs as sh404SEF/4SEF requires. However it allows 4SEO to do the "duplicate management on many more extensions much more easily).

Either way, the duplicates management is entirely automatic - although in either case you can manually customize it as you see fit, with manual canonical selection URL per URL, or with a rule to apply a canonical to many URL in one go.
