Hi, I'm planning to buy 4SEO component for an ecommerce (Hikashop) that will go online soon. The question that comes to my mind and which has certainly been asked before is: does 4SEF complete 4SEO and add functionalities that 4SEO doesn't have? According to one of your answers I found on your forum, the answer is yes. Here's what you replied in one of your answers on the helpdesk: "...Few people are of this opinion actually, and that's one of the reasons 4SEO is SEO-only and 4SEF is SEF only. 4SEO does not do anything related to SEF URLs, and never will. The data it can import from sh404SEF is meta data and redirects only. 4SEO works with any SEF solution: regular Joomla SEF, sh404SEF on Joomla 3, 4SEF on Joomla 3 and 4, or any other SEF URL extensions that still exists. 4SEF is dedicated to maintaining backward compatibility to sh404SEF users when moving, or preparing to move to Joomla 4. Only 4SEF can import SEF URLs from sh404SEF (and nothing else)..." If I've understood correctly, 4SEO also manages SEF URLs, but in the traditional Joomla core way (i.e. from the Joomla menu structure), while 4SEF is more permissive and lets create URLs from article titles and/or category titles. Is this the main difference that defines these two components? Thanks, Lorenzo

Hi

does 4SEF complete 4SEO and add functionalities that 4SEO doesn't have?

It's not a matter of completing. These 2 extensions are unrelated and have nothing in common.

If I've understood correctly, 4SEO also manages SEF URLs

Not at all.. 4SEO does absolutely nothing in relation with SEF URLs. From the text you copied yourself above:

4SEO does not do anything related to SEF URLs, and never will.

but in the traditional Joomla core way (i.e. from the Joomla menu structure),

4SEO does not know or care in any way about SEF URLs. At all. It does not store, create, modify or manage them in any way.

while 4SEF is more permissive and lets create URLs from article titles and/or category titles

It's not "permissive". It actively and entirely creates URLs that do not use menu items. Joomla URLs do not exist anymore and are taken over.

Is this the main difference that defines these two components?

There is no "main difference". These 2 extensions have strictly nothing in common.

ok thanks, so two components with two different functionalities. At this point, for a site that is not yet online and not indexed by search engines, is it possible to install 4SEF later or is it advisable to install it  before the site goes online? Thanks.

Hi,

It's the opposite.

If you are going to use 4SEF, you must start with it from day 1 and not change. The reason is that with or without 4SEF, your URLs are going to be different.  And that is the worst thing you can do in terms of SEO: change the URL of a page.

You can decide to add 4SEO later maybe but I'd advise against, because the most important SEO things in 2023 are in 4SEO, not 4SEF.

So the decision you have to make is to use 4SEF or not. But that decision is final. Either you use it or not, but if you use it, use it from the start and don't remove it.

Best regards
