I defined the error page to be one of the menu items, but it does not work, the error page always leads to the homepage.

Hi,

This is not the 4SEO error page, and is actually not coming from 4SEO (you can easily check that by disabling 4SEO system plugin: the problem appears in the same way.

There's something doing a redirect to /index.php (not the home page) in case of a 404. This is usually, to a rule in your .htaccess file but can be some other external cause or additional code added to your template for instance.
