Joomla 6-ready extensions available for testing
Hi all,
Another real quick blog post to announce the availability of development versions of all our extensions compatible with the current beta version of Joomla 6.
Joomla 6 is around the corner
The Joomla project announced the release of Joomla 6 beta 2 recently. This is a test version, meant to let website owners but also extensions and templates developers update their websites or products to adjust to the upcoming Joomla 6 official release.
Joomla 6 official full and stable release is scheduled for October 14.
Why bother?
Joomla 6 is what's called a major version (i.e. from 5.x to 6.x). As major version change is when Joomla developers are "allowed" to include breaking changes, well, they do.
And so Joomla 6:
- has some breaking changes compared to Joomla 5
- but also has a compatibility plugin which allows extensions/templates that are not yet adjusted to run on Joomla 6
Take notice: if you are using the Joomla 5 compatibility plugin to achieve the same thing on Joomla 5 - that is, allow Joomla 4-only extensions to run on Joomla 5, then it's not the same "compatibility plugin".
In other words, Joomla 4-only extensions will break on Joomla 6, even if the Joomla 6 compatibility plugin is enabled.
How about Weeblr's extensions?
Per the title of this post, I have made new versions of all our extensions that run on Joomla 6, the current beta 2 test version at least. The Joomla 6 compatibility plugin is NOT needed.
They are available now in the Development versions area of the site (active subscription required to access paid-for products).
In order to be prepared for the October 14 release, you can now download the extensions you use and:
- test that they still work normally on your current Joomla 3, 4 or 5 website - Do this on a copy of your site, not on the live site
- test that they work as expected also on test Joomla 6 installation
Please report any issue on the helpdesk as usual, in each extension's respective category. Adding a tag such as [j6] at the start of your ticket would be nice, to help identify these reports more easily.
What should I do with all this?
Joomla 6 will not have any new features or major changes between now and its official release. All the remaining work is to test and fix bugs, both in Joomla, your website and extensions.
So now is likely a good time to start testing Joomla 6, and our extensions, so that we're all ready when the time comes to update to Joomla 6.
Cheers,
Yannick
