Greetings, I Just updated to latest version which fixed old version not showing 404 errors. It's working but now I cannot change anything in configuration. I get "Could not save data. Error: Another article from this category has the same alias" on anything I try to do. I've cleared cache, not it. Help please? Thanks, Wallace

Hi Wallace,

Don't think you replied yet to my email of this morning. If you haven't please don't, or we'll have 2 different channels of communication and we'll get lost for sure.

I still want to discuss with you because I haven't understood what your problem was (old version not showing 404 errors) and I want to see through that.

As for the error you're getting, it usually happens when you have modified and/or deleted either the sh404sef custom content category or the __404__ error page.

Rgds

Hello Again,

Okay, I fixed the error code problem and you were right! It was my fault, so thank you very much! I'm still trying to figure out how to get the custom 404 error page to work :))))

Regarding the 404 errors not showing up on old version; when I was informed by Google that they could not access my site, I looked and had over 12,000 - 404 errors. I went to check the back-office and under "404 request manager" there were none. As soon as I upgraded to sh404SEF 4.6.0.2718 they started showing up and as of this time/date there's 486 and growing. See attached file 2015-08-17_view404_export for more information.

Please sir, kindly give me your opinion on why these non-existing pages are trying to be accessed. To me it looks like a cyber attack. No I'm not paranoid, but I have made enemies over the last 8 years ;-)

Respectfully Submitted,
Wallace xxxx

Hi,

All those entries with bigdump.php can be accounted as attacks, since bidbump is a script to backup the database. If you don;t have this script somewhere in your site’s folder this is just a 404 and nothing to worry. But if you ever used that script PLEASE delete it from your site’s html folder!!!
This most probably is a robot that repeats attacks till it finds some vulnerability and get access to your site. Enforcing some protection is a good idea. .htaccess and some firewall is always the easiest to setup (depending on your host, obviously). Fail2Ban is a very famous script that will keep you safe ,but needs an VPS or dedicated server. Solutions also exist in the extensions directory of Joomla.
