Hi there
I initially purchased sh404SEF a couple of years ago for this Joomla 2.5 site www.xxxx.com.au This site is #1 on Google organic for the keyword "deep sea fishing Sydney" something which is obviously gold to us. I am busy rebuilding the site in Joomla 3 here http://www.xxxx.net/xxxx.com.au
I have not yet installed sh404SEF and my question is do you think I should install before migrating to the live domain and get all the SEF friendly endings the same relative to the live site
i.e www.xxxx.com.au/sef-friendly-url is http://www.xxxx.net/xxxx.com.au/sef-friendly-url ?
The once all of those are correct backup (Akeeba) and restore into the live environment or only install sh404SEF after going live ?

I am understandably paranoid about confusing the Google bots and falling from #1 Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Regards
Peter

Hi

You should absolutely do all your development using sh404SEF and make sure 100% of your links are going to be exactely the same before going live with the new version.

Not sure what you're changing going from J2 to J3, but if the content is the same, the URLs created will also be the same, and that should be fairly easy. Even if you change your menus, as sh404SEF doesn't use them (at least with default settings), URLs should still be the same.

Whatever you do though, indeed all your URLs should the same on your dev site. It's only when everything is good that you go live.

Hi there
Thanks for you advice and excellent extension. One more question, I ma developing the new site on the base url http://www.xxxx.net/xxxx.com.au/ When I am ready to go live I intend to backup and restore using Akeeba to the live url www.xxxx.com.au How will sh404SEF know how to handle this or will it cause the restore process to go haywire ?

Hi

Another question on the live site www.xxxx.com.au the Calendar menu item SEF url is calendar. In the new site in sh404SEF there are dozens of calendar urls generated by the component JEvents, I am not sure what to do about it but I found one which I think is the generic one and I changed that's SEF to calendar and it seems to work. index.php?option=com_jevents&Itemid=122&lang=en&layout=calendar&view=month

If you look at the menu item the link that it is calling is actually
index.php?option=com_jevents&view=month&layout=calendar which is substantially different ? I can't find that one in sh404SEF though ?

Am I on the right track here ?

Hi

1 - Links created by Joomla are relative, sites can be moved around. The only links that cause problems are those created by users who creates links in articles or custom modules who are either absolute (they include the domains or just start with /), are fully SEF already or similar. As long as you create links with index.php?option=... you're fine

2 - The link is the same, assuming the id of this menu item is 122. Joomla doesn't show that in the input field for the link in the menu item editing page.

Hi there

Many thanks, I think I am ready to go live.
Dev site http://www.xxxx.net/xxxx.com.au and live site http://www.xxxx.com.au/ now have exactly the same SEF relative urls'
