Hi, Soon after I installed sh404sef, I got a mail from Google Web Master Central saying "Googlebot cannot access CSS and JS files on http://xxxx.lk/" From online forums I understand this is due to the plugin and could be fixed by doing some setting changes. Please can you help me with step by step guidance on what needs to be done? Thanks

Hi,

Are you using some plugin for compression/concatenation of JS and CSS files?
If so, and that plugin is using the cache folder you have to exclude the relative subfolders in robots.txt

Hi Dimitris,

No we don't use any other plugins - what else could be the reason?

Thanks

Hi,

This might be coming from your template, as well. Which template are you using?

Could you please provide us with superadmin credentials to your website. You can create a temporary account, and delete it afterwards, but it must have superuser level.

Hi,

Investigating further I see that two modules and a component are using the component, modules and cache folders for their css, js. These folders by default are NOT supposed to be accessible from google BOT.

Hi,

You will need to edit the robots.txt (download it with FTP client and edit it with an editor, then re upload it) and allow these folders:

/cache/widgetkit/*
/cache/mod_pwebcontact/*
/modules/mod_suppliercat/css/*
/components/com_findproviders/css/*
/modules/mod_register_box/scripts/*
/components/com_findproviders/scripts/*

Hi Sharma,

In addition to what Dimitris explained above, I'd like to mention that this message from Google is totally not related to sh404SEF (it only has to do with your robots.txt content and the way the extensions on your site are programmed).

So I am a bit curious because you said

"From online forums I understand this is due to the plugin and could be fixed by doing some setting changes"

Can you tell me where you found such advice, I'd very much like to answer there that this is not sh404SEF-related...

Thanks and regards

Hi there,

Here you go - i had these URL book marked because I thought my issue could be similar. But i could be wrong as i'm not a savvy developer. But one thing i can certainly say is that my site has been live for some time now and this is the first time i got the message - a day after i installed the plugin.

Hope this helps. I'm very impressed by your proactive approach..

One more SEO question. These forums talk about allowing /templates/ in robot, txt
Should I be doing this as well?

"Note: Since July 2014 the lines for /templates/ and /media/ have been removed from robots.txt, so this article mostly applies to sites installed before that date (thanks to Sander Potjer for the tip). However, you may have more resources that should be unblocked, especially if you use extensions that combine your resources (JCH-Optimize, JBetolo, Scriptmerge, etc.)"

Thanks

Hi,

By default Joomla’s robots.txt is ALLOWING the template folder, so you don’t have to do something more here. The way this file works is that by default every folder is marked as allowed except the entries that specifically stated otherwise (disallow).
