 Hello,

We are busy building a website and using SH4040 it was working perfect. We had to change two categories by name and now SH404 shows for almost every page ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS. If we turn url optimize off in SH404 and use the standard Joomla URL optimize the URL's are working perfect.

If we delete all cache in Joomla and switch url optimize on in SH404 we get the same ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS message and nothing is working anymore. If we switch it off and use Joomla optimize it works perfect.

We already try to delete al SEF url's but also without no result.

How van we solve this? Can we clear SH404 complete and let it build again?

Thank you in advance!

Hi

1 - Cannot do anything without full and real links to the pages involved.

2 -
We had to change two categories by name
What do you mean by that? what are the exact and full steps you took to achieve that? in Joomla? in sh404SEF?

3 -
We already try to delete al SEF url's but also without no result.
You should not "Purge" URLs on a live site, it's a bit like deleting all your articles, a little less serious because they will be rebuilt automatically after some times but still.

4 -
ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS
means that you have a redirect instruction that sends a page to itself. Those redirects can be added in your .htaccess, as aliases under sh404SEF or by any other means. So:

- did you add any redirect at any point when you "changed two categories by name"?
- the fact the problem occurs only when sh404SEF means that that redirect loops that was created somehow is only acting on the sh404SEF URL. So it's more likely the redirect has been added to sh404SEF but it can also mean that it was added in .htaccess

The most important thing for us now is that you provide us the exact steps, with full and real URLs and category name, of what you changed on the site.

Hi Yannick,

Fortunately, we are at the beginning of the website construction and there are only two language categories and 5 articles.

We have renamed the language categories from Nederlands to NL and from English to EN in Joomla.
Nothing else.

Than we notice that Sh404 give some errors on all the pages. We try to fix this but without result. We notice that if we switch off SH404 optimization and use Joomla the links are working fine. We try to delete the Joomla Cache and switch on SH404 but the problem reappeared.

After this, we removed the SEF pages in SH404 in the hope that they would rebuild correctly. But unfortunately the problem is still there.

We did not put any manual redirects in SH404 and also not in the .htaccess file.

I will add login details so you can view the situation.

The urls are now working properly because URL optimization is disabled in SH404.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi

We have renamed the language categories from Nederlands to NL and from English to EN in Joomla.
OK, so that probably explains it.

Joomla does not use categories to build URLs but sh404SEF does. With Joomla a URL first depends on a menu item alias.

With sh404SEF, at least with default settings, URLs are like /category-1/category-2/article-alias

By Changing /category-1/ from "English" to "en", you changed the URL from /category-1/category-2/article-alias to /en/category-2/article-alias. And that is a problem because Joomla will prefix that with the language code and having 2 language codes will then confuse the language filter system plugin which will do redirects.

So I would advise you change back those categories to any thing else BUT the actual language code, then purge URLs again to get rid of all those URLs.

Hi Yannick,

We did use the original language codes. Now I purge all articles and menu items and start all over. There is only a working homepage.

I made a new article, put the article in the language categorie NL, made a new menu item, linked the new article to the menu item (everything within NL)
URL looks good but result.. 404

Now I lost my complete website structure and start all over and still it is not working.

How can I solve this?

Regards Leon

Hi

We did use the original language codes.
Not sure what you mean by that.

How can I solve this?
As explained above:

1 - Change back the "top" categories from "en" to "English or whatever you want but not a real language code
2 - Purge URLs
3 - Visit home page and navigate pages to start the URL construction process.

I made a new article, put the article in the language categorie NL, made a new menu item, linked the new article to the menu item (everything within NL)

URL looks good but result.. 404

1 - There cannot be a language category called "nl", as explained in my first message.
2 - Have you loaded the home page BEFORE trying to load the URL?

At this stage, please only discuss things with full and real URL. I need to understand and see what you are doing.

Hi,

I did purge all the articles and categories. The only thing that is left is a homepage and the categorie Uncategorized.

I made a new categorie called "videoproducties" and I connect this to the system language "Nederlands (nl-NL)".

Than I made an article called "corporate video" and connect this to the categorie 'videoproducties" and "Nederlands (nl-NL)" Language.

I made a new menu item called "videoproductie" and connect the new article 'Corporate video" on it.

So this is basic structure and have to work.

I go to the homepage xxxx.nl, this is working fine. And see my new menu item called 'Videoproducties"

When I click on it it takes a while and the url that is shown is xxxx.nl/corporate-video with a 404 again. So I don't see the categorie. If I type in the url; "xxxx.nl/videoproducties/corporate-video" (this should be it) it get forwarded to the url from before with 404.

This is exactly what I am doing.

Regards,

Leon

Hi

OK, I guess there's something else then in your setup. Could you please provide us with superadmin credentials to your website. You can create a temporary account, and delete it afterward, but it must have superuser level.

Thanks and regards

Hi,

1 - I purged URLs
2 - I loaded the home page
3 - The link in the Videoproducties was: https://xxxx.nl/videoproducties/corporate-video
4 - Clicked on it, worked normally

Please advise.

Hi

Indeed, cannot say why you had issue with that. Anyway, glad it's sorted out, closing this ticket now, feel free to open a new one as needed. If you do so, please mention this ticket number in the new one.

If you created any superadmin account for us, be sure to delete or block it now to avoid unnecessary risk in the future.

Be sure to also check out wbAMP, our Accelerated Mobiles pages plugin for Joomla - without AMP, you're missing out on mobile visitors!
