I want to use sh404SEF to improve some of my URLs, particularly duplicate titles etc caused by pagination on large categories.

I've purchased and installed sh404SEF but at the moment it is changing ALL my existing URLs.

Is there a way to make it default to my old Joomla SEF URLs and then I can change the ones I want to, rather than having to work through them all?

So could I import my existing Joomla SEF URLS somehow and then start tweaking?

Best regards,

Mark

Hi

This is not possible - because Joomla URLs are for the most part based on menus which is what generates most of the duplicate content issues. What we do instead is that we 301 redirect the Joomla SEF to the corresponding sh404SEF URLs. Just be sure this feature is enabled under the "Advanced" tab of the sh404SEF configuration.

Hi,

I have used the option to redirect Joomla URLs to the new sh404SEF URLs.

I've created a spreadsheet (attached) to show original Joomla URLs from a Site Map generator, sh404SEF URLs generated the same way plus an export from sh404SEF URLs.

There are 164 original URLs. sh404SEF has generated a Site Map with 190 URLs but internally there are now 524 URLs.

There seems to be some duplicate URLs for testimonial tables generated by the site map run with sh404SEF but the big increase internally seems to be caused by sh404SEF adding URLs for every image in the Phoca Galleries plus web links but I don't have time to study 500+ links to determine exactly what has happened.

I was hoping that sh404SEF would help me out-of-the-box but at the moment it doesn't seem to be doing that.

Am I missing some important setting that will stop this mass of URLs being generated?

Best regards,

Mark

This is getting frustrating! I have just tried to upload 3 txt files, which your attachment widget says are acceptable and received an error message saying that they are not allowed.

I will now try uploading a zip file, which it also says is allowed.

Unfortunately your system will not allow me to upload a zip file either.

Please advise me how I should get this information to you.

Hi

Sorry about the trouble, we have plenty of uploaded files either txt or zip, that does not cause any issue normally. The error message says something about the mime type.

1 - How where the TXT files created, using wich software?
2 - are you on mac, windows or linux?

Back to the actual problem:

There are 164 original URLs. sh404SEF has generated a Site Map with 190 URLs but internally there are now 524 URLs.

You seem to be worried by the fact that sh404SEF lists 500+ URLs in its database. That seems absolutely normal considering the amount of duplicates Joomla generates. That does not mean you have 500+ URLs visible to search engines and the outside world.

I was hoping that sh404SEF would help me out-of-the-box but at the moment it doesn't seem to be doing that
Most likely it is absolutely doing that already. What sh404SEF does is take the multiple non-sef URLs generated by Joomla/extensions for the same content, and group them under one single public SEF URL.

If you look at your sh404SEF SEF URL manager, and some of the URLs listed have orange counters showing some duplicates, then you are good. This means sh404SEF has detected multiple URLs created by Joomla and grouped them under one single SEF.

When duplicates counter is clicked:

You can upload anything you want to this online private folder. But please clarify what exactly we are after.
