 Hello,

I have amended an existing URL (url 3 on image) so I could make the URL more relevant.

I now have a new amended URL (URL 2 on image) and also the old URL 3.

Do I need to add a canonical URL to URL 3 pointing to URL 2, or should I just delete URL 3?

I have added a title and meta to the new URL. Will this override any previous meta in menu or article?

Thanks

Ian

Hi

What happened is that Joomla created many (20+) duplicates of that URL (see the count in the Duplicates column).
Deleting them is pointless, as Joomla will create them again.

You have 2 options:

- understand what's creating all those duplicates (your menu structure, missing Itemid in some modules maybe?)
- or rename ALL the main URL and all those duplicates.

Before customization, sh404SEF protected you from those duplicates, by making sure the outside world, including search engines, would only see on single SEF URL for all those identical pages. Now that you took one out, this cannot be done automatically and you have to customize them all.

Thanks for the prompt response.

How would I customise all 21 of them. If I click the orange button it gives me a list of non SEF URLs but nowhere to add the new URL?

Where do I find the 21 URLs?

Thanks

Hi

They are there already. Just repeat the same procedure you did the first time:
- click on the "old" link
- customize it: this will customize the "first" duplicate
- press save: your new URL will now have a duplicate itself, and there will be one less duplicate in the "old" URL set

Hi,

Thanks for the response.

Just want to check a couple of thing before I make these changes.

1. If I amend a URL it will no longer have the shf404 duplicate protection?

2. To transfer the duplictates from the old URL to the amended URL I need to open the old URL and enter the new URL into the 'new SEF URL' save and close. I need to use this process for each duplicate?

Thanks

Hi

1 - Well you are "managing" duplication yourself when you start customizing the URLs. If joomla creates more duplicates, you will have to also customize them when they appear (however, after the initial creation of the site, most likely there won't be more duplicates created)

2 - Yes, that's correct. At the end of the process, you should end up with all "old" non-sef transferred as new ones, and the new one should have all 21 duplicates.
