It would be nice to redirect some 404 requests to external URLs. We have separated some content on our site to subdomains and other external URLs, it would be nice to have a simpler method to redirect these request to the new home at an external URL.

This is something we've been looking at for many years, but there was never really a large demand for it, and it's actually a lot of work to do, because we don't have a User Interface for that. It would requires quite some changes to the "Aliases" page, which assumes in many areas that target is a non-sef URL (index.php?option=xxxx).
Nevertheless, it's on the list.
