 Good morning

Is there a setting for canonical links in sh404sef?

I would like to switch them off but can't find any settings?

Thanks

Mark

Hi

sh404SEF doesn't add any canonical, except in a very few special cases, like the home page for instance, or on some multilingual sites home pages.

Canonical links in sh404SEF are normally set manually, on a URL per URL basis. I assume you didn't do that, if you want to remove them.

Joomla will sometimes add canonical by itself (if there query vars in the URL requested) but sh404SEF normally removes that canonical, which is often wrong.

Why do you want to remove them?

Good morning and thanks for coming back to me so quick

As I understand it canonical links can cause duplicate content issues for SEO purposes and may penalise my site.

Is this not the case? Is it ok to canonical links?

Thanks

Mark

Mmm, no. Canonical are here to solve duplicate content issues, prevent it. Not cause it.

Ah right ok

When i run the site through a seo checker I get the attached results and below is an extract

How to fix - Canonical Tag Checker

The Canonical Link Tag can be used when there are several pages with similar content and you want to tell the search engines which page you prefer to use in the search results. If your webpage does not have duplicate content and it has the preferred URL you must remove the canonical link tag.

This is a wrong statement. Maybe you should start using another SEO analyzer.

Hi

Not really. You're not the first one posting funky recommendations by those automated software. Usually, they are quite ok, but sometimes some suggestions are weird. To be honest, I only hear of them when there is a problem, so it's not really fair for them.
