If I try to open a false page on www.xxxx.it (as www.xxxx.it/dfgdffdgfg) I see the homepage instead of page_ 404_ error.
The wrong pages aren't save on "404 request manager".

I can give you username and password to verify directly.

Thank you, Alessandro

Hi

That's a big problem here: there's no 404 status. You have something on your site doing a redirect to the home page and that's very bad. Please disable sh404SEF, using only Joomla SEF and try again.

Now it gives error 404 and not the custom page of sh404sef.
Example: http://www.xxxx.it/glass/news/item/33-pellicole-per-vetri-verona.html

Hi

Regarding the 404 page not working, this may happen if:

1 - you have renamed or unpublished the __404__ article or the sh404SEF custom content category
2 - you have set at least one extension to "Use Joomla router" under the "By component' tab of sh404SEF configuration.

Good question!
I don't know when it start working again. I wrote the post and then:

- Uninstalled Fox Contact Plugin
- Change Template of the home page
- Activated "Sh404sef Multi Language Compatibility" in JSitemap PRO Plugin
- Deactivated: Custom 404 page contents and 404 page override mode in JSitemap PRO Plugin

You can see __404__ article correctly activated directly in the screenshot.

Hi

You can see __404__ article correctly activated directly in the screenshot.
How about the category?

Activated "Sh404sef Multi Language Compatibility" in JSitemap PRO Plugin
What the heck is that???

OK, I can at least imagine that this is caused by JSitemap pro. Rather than spending a long time on this, we 're about to release a new version where the 404 page mechanism has been changed, precisely to avoid problems with extensions like JSItemap which also want to handle the 404 page.

Please download it from here: xxxx

Then install over current version (BTW, I assume you're using the latest version of sh404SEF?).

The __404__ article and the sh404SEF custom content category are not used anymore. The error page is now only modified from the sh404SEF configuration ("Error page" tab). If you have customized the __404__ article, the changes you made will be copied over to sh404SEF.
The old __404__ articles and the category are left on your site, but unpublished as they are not needed anymore.

Please let me know.

Hi

No. Could you please provide us with superadmin credentials to your website. You can create a temporary account, and delete it afterwards, but it must have superuser level.

Thanks and regards

Hi

There were indeed some misconfiguration, as the sh404SEF page was set to be used only "For sh404SEF errors" instead of override Joomla error page.

However, even if I set it that way, the page doesn't shows always. It only works always when I set "BT_portfolio" to "use normal handling" or something else except "Use Joomla router".

It's always been difficult to use that setting, because when you use the Joomla router, well, you get the Joomla error. However, I thought I was able to handle it better now.
The problem that still remains is that the Itemid is not properly set, ie the template and the modules are not correct.

I will do some additional checks and get back to you. It is possible that I need to take a backup of the site to be able to debug step by step. I'll get back to you shortly.

Hi

Took me more than an hour but I finally found out!

The error page was actually correctly created, but it was not displayed. That's because the correct template was not selected. When the error page happened, Joomla was setting the "default-landing" template style, which has no component output, instead of the template associated with our errorpage.

Anyway, I found a way to force the right template style, and uploaded a new version to your site, which seems to be ok now.

Thank you very much for your assistance.
Now I have a doubt, I've moved xxxx.it toghether with xxxx.it. xxxx.it ( so as xxxx.it) is using Artio JomSef; I had it from another webmaster.
I'd like to install sh404sef because I think it's better.

How can I avoid to have error 404 pages not working during the passage?
Should I try and in case of problem I'll write you here again or is there any method to avoid problems?

Hi

There's no automated way to switch from one to the other. As we have some common roots, it's quite possible however that many URLs are going to be the same. It depends on what sort of extensions and content you have.

What you should do is get a list of URLs (using a sitemap for instance) from the current site. Then you make the switch to sh404SEF, and get the list of URLs and you compare the two lists.

If most are common, and only a few are different, then you can manually customize the URLs that different in sh404SEF.

If there are a lot of differences, then it's up to you. Either you have a lot of work changing the URLs manually in sh404SEF, or maybe it's better to not change extension.
