I'm working with Acyba Tech Support trying to troubleshoot an issue with AcyMailing 5.  It has to do with a URL that has a 2-part query string, such as this from "View It Online" in a recent e-newsletter:

https://www.xxxx.com/index.php?option=com_acymailing&ctrl=archive&task=view&mailid=87&key=KxCj4JFo&subid=1325-89KZ9oLkvP6a2j&tmpl=component&utm_source=newsletter_87&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=2020-10-newsletter

This will eventually resolve and display the page - it just takes 2-3 minutes.

This 1-part query string resolves quickly:

https://www.xxxx.com/index.php?utm_source=newsletter_90&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=2020-11-newsletter

FYI - I've tested the 2-part query string with ALL of the following items DISABLED and it still takes 2-3 minutes to load - sh404SEF, JCH Optimize, JCE Editor, and SecurityCheck Pro.

QUESTIONS:

1 - Any known issues using sh404SEF with AcyMailing v5 or v6?

2 - Any specific configuration settings (Configuration > General > By Component) needed for sh404SEF with AcyMailing v5 or v6 (or similar product)?

3 - While looking at SEF extensions, I noticed Joomla's "System - SEF" plugin was enabled.  Should this be disabled when using sh404SEF?

Thanks,

T. H.

Hi

It has to do with a URL that has a 2-part query string,

This is not a "two-part " query string but  a totally normal URL with:

- a path: "index.php"

- a query string: everything after the "?"

This 1-part query string resolves quickly:

https://www.xxxx.com/index.php?utm_source=newsletter_90&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=2020-11-newsletter

It certainly does but this has nothing with the URL itself. This URL is only loading your site home page, instead of an Acymailing page.

So if Acymailing is slow to load, then this page will be fast jsut because it's not an AcyMailing page.

1 - Any known issues using sh404SEF with AcyMailing v5 or v6?

Nope, we use it here and many sites use both.

2 - Any specific configuration settings (Configuration > General > By Component) needed for sh404SEF with AcyMailing v5 or v6 (or similar product)?

No again, pretty much no component actually requires anything on the By component tab.

3 - While looking at SEF extensions, I noticed Joomla's "System - SEF" plugin was enabled.  Should this be disabled when using sh404SEF?

That must be enabled at all times. Joomla is still handling the SEF system, even when sh404SEF running. What it does is: when processing SEF URLs, if Joomla detects sh404SEF it will hand-off some of the work to sh404SEF. If you disable the Joomla SEF plugin, you don't have SEF URLs basically.

If that AcyMailing page is so slow to load, it's unlikely to be an issue with other extensions. The usual culprit is the database work, ie Acy needs to load/write a lot of data from the database and that takes time. However 2 minutes is extraordinary unless:

- your database tables need maintenance, optimization

- your mysql server is not capable of handling the number of subscribers you have

- that page requires loading some data from an external source, an external server, which is not responding quick enough

Did you get useful information from enabling "Debug system" in Joomla configuration and load the page? All db query will be listed if you enable that, with the time each take, this should give already some indication on where to look.

Best regards

Hi

That did not come through either. I can't really debug Acymailing for you but I think if that page of their component loads so slow, that's the 1st thing they should look at, it tells what takes which time.

Best regards

Yannick - hi!  Thanks for the detailed reply - VERY helpful!  Apologies for not using 1-part and 2-part correctly - didn't know how else to differentiate these.

See bold burgundy for other comments.

Thx

Todd

If that AcyMailing page is so slow to load, it's unlikely to be an issue with other extensions. The usual culprit is the database work, ie Acy needs to load/write a lot of data from the database and that takes time. However 2 minutes is extraordinary unless:

- your database tables need maintenance, optimization - I'll check on this - I believe an Akeeba utility I have will optimize tables.

- your mysql server is not capable of handling the number of subscribers you have  - We only have about 2,000 subscribers and (per Google Analytics) most are reading newsletter as email on their laptop/desktop - so, doubtful.

- that page requires loading some data from an external source, an external server, which is not responding quick enough - I don't know - Acy5 is doing the loading.

Did you get useful information from enabling "Debug system" in Joomla configuration and load the page? All db query will be listed if you enable that, with the time each take, this should give already some indication on where to look. - I had NOT done this previously, because I didn't know how to do this and the Acyba tech didn't suggest.  I took your suggestion, and then saved the slow-to-load page with ALL debug info in both HTML and PDF formats, and zipped up all the files in var>www>joomla>administrator>logs.  I've emailed the HTML, PDF, and ZIP files to Acyba tech support (I've attached, just as FYI).  From what even my unsophisticated eye could tell, there were a LOT of SQL statements and a LOT of calls to other plug-ins - I imagine this info will give the Acyba tech a much better idea of source of problem.  GREAT suggestion - thank you!

Hi

Apologies for not using 1-part and 2-part correctly - didn't know how else to differentiate these

My point was more about the fact you don't need to differentiate them, they are just different URLs, loading different pages and so one is an Acymailing page and the other is basically just your home page. The useful information here is probably that it is indeed AcyMailing that's being slow for some reason as it does not seem to be the case on other pages of the site.

- your database tables need maintenance, optimization - I'll check on this - I believe an Akeeba utility I have will optimize tables.

Before you do anything like that, you should look (or have acymailing folks look) at the System Debug output and identify DB queries, or  part of code that are causing the slow down.

- that page requires loading some data from an external source, an external server, which is not responding quick enough - I don't know - Acy5 is doing the loading.

Not entirely. I'm assuming that page is loading the content of an email newsletter you sent. If that newsletter message contains something (an image, some data extracted from another service), this can be slow and slow down the entire page. A bit far fetched though.

That really is the 1st place to look, I 'm sure they'll get an idea of what's going on from that.

I will leave this ticket open in case you need to add something. It will automatically close in 2 weeks if no further comment is made.

Yannick - thanks for this reply, and all the debugging tips you provided!

I'm pleased to report that the debug info I sent to Acyba let their developer find and fix the issue.  All the URLs in the e-newsletter now resolve very quickly.

Again, thanks for going above and beyond on this - greatly appreciated!

Best,

Todd
