The 404 error is not logging in the dashboard.   Also SH404 redirect 404 error to home page.  I would like to make a custom 404 page and have it redirect to that page and log the error.

Here is the login info if you need it.

Hi

The 404 error is not logging in the dashboard.   Also SH404 redirect 404 error to home page.

This indicates that you have:

- Enabled 301 redirect from Joomla SEF to sh404SEF (under Advanced tab). This should stay disabled

- Or you have set at least one component, any component, to Use Joomla router under By component. If you enable back the Joomla router, it will cause that sort of redirects to home page on 404s, that's one of the problem it has. All components should be left on "Use default handler" for normal operation of sh404SEF.

I would like to make a custom 404 page and have it redirect to that page

Not entirely sure of what you mean but 404 pages should never be redirected. Never. Do you actually mean that you want to display a custom page when a 404 happens?

If you want to display a custom 404, you can totally customize the sh404SEF error page under the Error page tab of sh404SEF configuration.
