I want to add a "visit my Instragram account" button on my site. Since I'm using SH404SEF and the Social buttons plugin for sharing content to FB and Pinterest, can I extend it in some way instead of installing a new plugin?

This can be done by creating layout overrides in your template. Not a huge task but you'll need to be familiar with Joomla template overrides mechanism and a little bit of PHP.
The files to copy to your template html/layouts folder are from sh404SEF layouts folder at /administrator/components/com_sh404sef/layouts/com_sh404sef/social/static/default
We cannot help you directly with customizations but looking at the existing buttons should make it easy to add a new one.
