Due to problems with my URL (because of a wrong setting in K2) I had sh404SEF set to "Try to auto-redirect 404s" so it automatically redreicted to the right article. 95% of all users come through organic links/search result on Google. That setting worked fine, and found the right articles for my users. My URL structure is fixed again, but I can see, that I already have some backlinks to the "wrong" urls. (The problem has been there for a few month, before I discovered it)
I consider keeping "Try to auto-redirect 404s" enabled. But I am wondering if it could give me some problems.
Could it affect SEO or site perfomance (Due to redirect) or is there anything else, I should take in consideration. Is it better for me, to manually redirect the affected articles (Alias)?

Sincerely,
Martin

Hi,

If possible, I would not keep it enabled. I'd rather monitor your 404 and possibly create some redirects rules if you can. Redirects rules can have wildcards {*} so maybe with a couple of rules you can redirect most of the problematic URLs. Or you can also monitor your 404s and redirect the 404s you think should be redirected.

IF you leave it enabled, make sure you also leave enabled the message displayed when such redirects happen to inform users that they have been redirected.

The problem with this feature is that it works 95% of the times, but when it does not it means a user was asking for a specific page and they were sent possibly to a totally different one.
At least you want to display a message. And I personally find better to display a (good) 404 error page than send them to another unrelated page.

Again, if possible, do redirects: either with bulk redirects rules or individual URLs.
