We've been using the Facebook OpenGraph  and Twitter Cards feature of sh404sef for quite some time. However, we've had some client issues/pushback when setting up the Facebook App Id.
In contrast, we did notice that when using Yoast on WordPress for our WordPress clients, Yoast does not require a unique Facebook App Id setup for Facebook OpenGraph.
Do you know why that may be the case? Is there anyway we could get sh404sef to also not require a unique Facebook App ID for OpenGraph? It would save us a ton of time and hassle in setup.

I apologize for the second post, here is the steps for enabling and using FB Open Graph for Yoast which does not appear to require a Facebook App ID: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/getting-open-graph-for-your-articles/

Hi

sh404SEF does not require anything. Having an App id is a FB recommendation, it' s not mandatory. Not having one will have negative effects, for instance shared items might show a "shared with sh404SEF" mention.

Please check this documentation page for more details.

Best regards

Hi,
sh404SEF does not require anything. Having an App id is a FB recommendation, it' s not mandatory.

According to the documentation you sent me (and what I was actually previously referring to, you have a bold and emphasized callout that says
"If you do not provide your own App Id for Facebook, sh404SEF will default to its own App Id. However, due to security concerns, Facebook only allows this on desktop sharing. On mobile, sharing will not work at all. Most likely, even desktop sharing will stop working soon. It is therefore mandatory that you obtain your own Facebook App Id for your site."

Has that "mandatory" changed?

Can you provide me an example (i.e. a screenshot) of the shared with sh404sef displaying? Are there any negative effects besides the chance of seeing "shared with sh404sef"?

Hi

Has that "mandatory" changed?
Indeed it has actually. I reviewed the matter as it is unfortunately changing and an AppId is not required anymore - unless the social plugins are to be used inside of a mobile app, android or ios. Meaning that sharing from the mobile version of your website will work without your own appid.

I just tested again and sharing with sh404SEF appid does not show any more the "Shared Via sh404SEF" message. So it looks good for now but you have to be aware that this may change in the future, just like it did in the past so I would still recommend to get an app id if possible. Considering the trouble, it may just be something you monitor.

I'll reword the documentation to be more accurate about that.

Best regards

Thanks for the clarification and for updating the documentation - that will be a lot more straight forward now.
Facebook is a pain about changing their policies all the time - so I know what you mean!
One follow up clarification, if someone shares a URL from a website. Let's say https://www.xxxx.com/ for illustration (one of our clients). If they share that URL within the Facebook App, it should not show "Shared via sh404SEF", correct?

I just wanted to make sure I understood your comment about "social plugins used inside of a mobile app".

HI

If they share that URL within the Facebook App, it should not show "Shared via sh404SEF", correct?
As far as I know, the "Shared via xxx" thing does not exist any longer.

In any case, it would appear only if the item was shared using the sharing buttons provided by sh404SEF, because they were using the default sh404SEF Appid - when one was not provided by the admin.

Best regards
