The 404 Error redirect to home page and doesn't register the 404 error in the app.

I would like to for the Joomla 404 or Sh404 error to show instead of redirecting home page.

Hi

The 404 Error redirect to home page and doesn't register the 404 error in the app.
If a redirect happens then it's normal for a 404 not to register, precisely because there was no 404 but instead a redirect took place.

The 404 Error redirect to home page
That sort of thing would happened if you enabled back the Joomla router instead of using sh404SEF default settings. Possible settings changes that can cause the Joomla router to be back on are:

- Setting "301 redirect from Joomla sef to sh404SEF": should stay set to NO (under "Advanced")
- Setting any component to "Use Joomla router" instead of "Use default handler" (under "By component")

Setting those back to their default value should fix the problem.

Best regards

I went ahead and made the changes described in your email. The 404 is still redirecting to the homepage instead of producing a 404 error and 4040 page.

Any other suggestions?

Any help you provide is much appreciated.

Hi

This is caused by ROute66. Disabling their system plugin stops the problem from happening. You should try find if this is a setting or a redirect you set up there: redirecting all 404s to home page is a bad thing in terms of SEO.

Best regards

Thank you for the quick reply.

FYI: When i disable the SH404 the redirect stop.

But, i'll look into the Route66 and hopefully this works.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi

FYI: When i disable the SH404 the redirect stop.
I know. They have those setting where they try to auto-redirect and auto-canonicalized things and they suggest you enable that. That's wrong. It's nearly impossible to autoredirect automatically and the end result is almost always wrong, as in your case.
That said you should not enable 2 components to handle URLs on your site, sh404SEF URLs are different from Joomla standard SEF URLs and I'm pretty sure that Route66 does not handle this use case and that's why they try to redirect to the home page for 404s.
You can actually reproduce the same thing with sh404SEF if you enable "301 redirect from Joomla SEF to sh404SEF": the Joomla router will tell us that the home page is a valid target in case of 404 and we end up with about the same result as Route66 - which is why this feature is disabled by default and we strongly warn people to not use them unless they have a strong reason to do so.

Best regards

Hi

I did not take it as ill-intended. I know it may seems counterintuitive but indeed their redirect feature is only meant to be used with Joomla URLs and won't do any good otherwise. After looking into it a bit more, I would suggest disabling both their Redirects and Canonicals features. I'm pretty sure they cannot work properly with Joomla SEF and I know they cannot work with sh404SEF.
