This is something that I've noticed for a long time so I'm curious as to why it happens.

So, I have a 404 Error Page set up via sh404sef settings. However, it doesn't trigger consistently for all unexisting URLs. Half of the time, it redirects to the homepage:

For example:
Unexisting URL: https://www.xxxx.com/wwe2k13/ (correctly triggers 404 error page)
Another one: https://www.xxxx.com/blabla (correctly triggers 404 error page)
Another one: https://www.xxxx.com/testing-url (goes to the homepage)
Another one: https://www.xxxx.com/wwe2k19/screenshotssss (goes to the homepage)
etc...

I can't find a consistency as to when it triggers the 404 error page and when it goes to the homepage instead. Not sure why?

Hi

That could happen if:

- you have enabled "301 redirect from Joomla SEF to sh404SEF" under "Advanced"
- any single component under the By component tab is set to "Use Joomla router"

If one of those is true, the Joomla router is asked to decode the incoming URL and unfortunately the Joomla router does not properly validate URLs so it will consider valid some 404s.

Of course, as a redirect happens you also need to be sure about not having redirects rules, ie aliases.

Best regards

I had this enabled. Disabling this fixed it!

Hi

Glad it's sorted out! Closing this ticket now, feel free to open a new one as needed. If you do so, please mention this ticket number in the new one.

If you created any superadmin account for us, be sure to delete or block it now to avoid unnecessary risk in the future.

Be sure to also check out wbAMP, our new Accelerated Mobiles pages plugin for Joomla - the next big thing is SEO, direct from Google themselves!

Best regards
