Trying and failing to import URL metadata from spreadsheet application. The import is unforgiving. Saving as a TXT or CSV fails. It seems like the TXT will work on one and only one condition: every single piece of data is surrounded in double quotes. I have tried 4 different spreadsheet applications (Excel, Google Sheets, Apple Numbers, and LibreOffice). Not a single one exports TXT or CSV with double quotes on every field. Of course, they all use double quotes on text. But even when I convert all the cells to text format, the apps remove double quotes.

So my question is, how exactly are users of sh404sef supposed to manage urls and metadata in a spreadsheet application and then import that into sh404sef. I am clearly doing something wrong, but I have no idea how to make it work.

Thanks for any guidance.

Hi

I used to use OpenOffice for that and also a small utillity called CSVFileView (from here). It will load your existing CSV file and then you can resave it under a suitable format.

First load your file, then select all the lines you want to export then select File -> Save Selected elements and choose "Custom delimited file" as the file type.

I agree this is cumbersome, I have added a tracker item to try revisit this. The matter is actually a bit complex because there's no such thing as a standard format for CSV. EXcel for instance will use a different delimite (, or ; usually) depending on the country you are in and there's no easy way to change that.

Best regards
