 Hi all

I moved a Joomla site to a new hoster.
http://www.xxxx.au
Since then I get 404 errors when switching SEF URLs on.

For the moment it the feature is switched off. My client wants the short URLs back!

I found a recommendation that sh404SEF would fix this and purchased the software today.

I try to follow the instructions but so far no luck.
It looks like the .htaccess file is ignored.
https://docs.joomla.org/Enabling_Search_Engine_Friendly_(SEF)_URLs_on_Apache
I tested this following the above instructions.
I called the hoster as well. So far I could not get any help from them...

My expectation was that I would install the sh404SEF plugin and this would be fixed.
Looks like this is not the case.

Do I expect the right thing from your software? What do I do next?
Regards
Romano

Hi Romano,

I am afraid this has nothing to do with Joomla or sh404SEF. If you get 404s when enabling SEF URLs, then indeed it means that:

1 - your .htaccess is ignored entirely, due to the way your hosting company has setup their server (note that .htaccess is only used by the Apache web server, so if you have a Windows server, or a linux server that uses Nginx web server, then you have to use other methods than a .htaccess)

OR

2 - your .htaccess needs to be fine-tuned to adjust to the specific requirements of your hosting company setup

1 is unlikely, but 2 is common. One way or the other, this is something you will have to sort out with your hosting company. Until they reply, I would suggest you try to adjust the content of your .htaccess until it works (unless you already know you got yourself a windows server).

Rgds
